How to Prepare for Your Photoshoot Session

General Information and Family specific tips.

A little preparation goes a long way in making your photo session smooth, relaxed, and fun. Here are some simple tips to help you get ready so you can show up confident and enjoy the experience.

1. Plan Your Outfits

  • Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident.

  • Stick to neutral or coordinating colors instead of exact matching.

  • Avoid busy logos or distracting patterns.

  • Lay everything out the night before (including shoes and accessories).

2. Think About Grooming

  • Schedule haircuts or color touch-ups about a week before your session.

  • Keep nails neat—simple and natural works best.

  • Bring along powder or lip balm if you’d like small touch-ups on the day.

3. Rest & Refresh

  • Get a good night’s sleep before your session so you feel fresh.

  • Stay hydrated and have a light meal or snack so you’re energized.

  • Avoid new skincare treatments right before your session in case of irritation.

4. Timing & Logistics

  • Arrive on time to make the most of your session.

  • If little ones are involved, schedule the session around their happiest times of day.

  • Pack essentials like water, snacks, wipes, or a small toy to keep kids happy.

5. Bring a Few Extras

  • Extra outfits for variety or just in case of spills.

  • Props or personal items you’d like included (blanket, bouquet, hat, etc.).

  • Comfortable shoes if your session involves walking.

How to Prepare for Your Family Photoshoot

Family photos are a wonderful way to capture your story at this moment in time—but preparing for them can sometimes feel overwhelming. The good news? With a little planning, you can set your family up for a smooth, fun, and relaxed session. Here are some tips to help.

1. Plan Outfits in Advance

  • Coordinate, don’t match. Pick a color palette (neutrals + 1–2 accent colors) and let each family member choose within it.

  • Comfort is key. Kids move, run, and play—make sure their outfits allow for it.

  • Lay everything out the night before (including shoes, socks, and hair accessories) to avoid last-minute stress.

2. Prep the Kids

  • Talk about the photoshoot ahead of time so they know what to expect.

  • Let them bring a favorite small toy or blanket for comfort.

  • Schedule your session around nap times or when your kids are happiest.

3. Keep Everyone Fresh & Happy

  • Make sure kids (and parents!) are well-rested.

  • Bring water and snacks to keep energy up.

  • Avoid messy snacks right before the session—opt for easy, clean ones if needed during.

4. Include Your Pets 🐶🐾

  • Exercise beforehand. Take your dog for a short walk or play session to release extra energy.

  • Bring treats & toys. These help grab attention and reward good behavior.

  • Leash & cleanup. Have a leash for safety and bring waste bags just in case.

  • Plan for breaks. Pets can get overstimulated—give them little pauses as needed.

  • Ask a helper. If possible, bring a friend to handle your dog when they’re not in photos.

5. Timing & Logistics

  • Plan to arrive a little early so no one feels rushed.

  • Double-check outfits, hair, and faces (no snack crumbs, stickers, or pet fur!) before you start.

  • If your location involves walking, bring comfy shoes and change into “photo shoes” once you arrive.

6. Stay Flexible

  • Don’t worry if kids—or pets—get wiggly or silly. Those natural moments often make for the best photos.

  • Go with the flow and trust your photographer to capture genuine connections and personalities.

7. Parents, Relax!

Kids (and dogs!) feed off your energy. If you’re calm and enjoying yourself, they’ll feel more at ease too. Focus on making memories, not perfection—those little in-between moments are the ones you’ll treasure most.

✅ Takeaway: With a little preparation, your family session (pets included!) will be filled with laughter, connection, and memories worth keeping forever.
